This phenomenon warrants extra attention because it has significant consequences for both energy output and service life. There are multiple causes of erosion, and they become more complex due to several evolving trends:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Increasing rotor diameter<\/strong> \u2013 Larger turbines have higher tip speeds, which exacerbate the erosion issue on the blades.<\/li><li><strong>Offshore wind farms<\/strong> \u2013 Offshore turbines are exposed to harsher weather conditions and require more maintenance, while access at sea is more difficult and thus more expensive.<\/li><li><strong>Service life expectations<\/strong> \u2013 Modern wind farms are designed for a lifespan of 25\u201330 years, which demands more from the durability of materials.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-481f567 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"481f567\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;jet_parallax_layout_list&quot;:[]}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-03cb5cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"03cb5cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Causes of Leading Edge Erosion<\/strong><\/p><p>Weather conditions are the main cause of leading edge erosion:<\/p><ul><li><strong>Raindrop impact<\/strong> \u2013 Tip speeds can exceed 300 km\/h. The larger the turbine diameter, the higher the speed. As a result, raindrops strike the leading edge at high velocity, and each drop&#8217;s impact causes slight stress in the material. The accumulation of droplets causes a build-up of stress that the rigid material of the turbine blade can eventually no longer absorb, leading to cracking.<\/li><li><strong>Dust and sand particles<\/strong> \u2013 Particularly in offshore or desert-like environments, small particles can act like sandpaper on the blade surface.<\/li><li><strong>Hail, ice, lightning<\/strong> \u2013 Harder precipitation causes more immediate damage to the surface. Lightning strikes, in particular, can have massive consequences.<\/li><li><strong>Salt water and UV radiation<\/strong> \u2013 In offshore wind turbines, salt accelerates the erosion process. UV radiation also has a major impact, as it degrades the resin in composite materials, causing them to break down over time.<\/li><\/ul><p>The effects of edge erosion range from significantly reduced energy output to premature material failure, with infiltration and structural weakening as a result. This explains why considerable R&amp;D investment is going into materials science and surface technology for turbine blades.<\/p><p>Textiles have recently gained momentum in surface technology. When the Scottish engineering firm ACT Blade approached the Belgian company Concordia Textiles, the solution wasn\u2019t immediately obvious. Rik Gekiere, Business Unit Manager ICA at Concordia, explains:<br \/>\u201cIn our lab, we simulated the impact of environmental conditions using every means at our disposal. Through trial and error, we worked our way towards a solution, which we found in a kind of textile sleeve that is stretched over the turbine blades.\u201d<\/p><p>The blades are made with a specially designed rib structure that makes the entire assembly much lighter. The base textile is coated with a protective film, formulated to enhance the properties of the textile without degrading them. The design is now protected and has been named <em>Zephyr<sup>TM<\/sup><\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c6b452c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c6b452c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs collaboration is key for Concordia, a co-creation was set up with\u00a0<strong>Finipur<\/strong>\u00a0for the lamination of the textile and film. Gunnar Van Daele, ceo of Finipur explains: \u201c<em>At Finipur, we are proud of our role in this innovative product. Our expertise in lamination techniques was the best guarantee to ensure the protective film worked perfectly with the textile. As a result, the material is stronger and more durable, which significantly extends the lifespan of wind turbine blades. In this way, together with Concordia, we contribute to a more sustainable future for wind energy.&#8221;<\/em>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24993f3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"24993f3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Zephyr\u2122 for the Next Generation of Wind Turbines<\/strong><\/p><p>Expectations for Zephyr\u2122 are high. The Scottish blade manufacturer ACT Blade is the first to integrate Zephyr\u2122 into its manufacturing process. The expectation is that Zephyr\u2122 will lead to significant savings in blade maintenance costs\u2014thanks to the power of textiles.<\/p><ul><li>Textiles are, for many reasons, the ideal solution in surface technology.<\/li><li>Textiles are lightweight, flexible, and impact-resistant, and they have excellent fatigue properties.<\/li><li>Textiles offer strength in multiple directions, are shrink-resistant and resistant to delamination.
