Anyone sailing along the Belgian coast will notice it immediately: offshore wind farms have become a permanent feature of the North Sea landscape. They provide green electricity and are essential to meet climate goals.  <\/p>\n<p>But beneath the water\u2019s surface \u2014 where we hardly look \u2014 a very different story unfolds. For many marine animals, a wind farm is not a visual landmark, but a source of noise. And especially during construction, this can be a major problem.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e841f3d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e841f3d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Loudest Phase: Pile Driving at Sea<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-de6b7db elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"de6b7db\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>An offshore wind turbine is usually installed on a monopile: a gigantic steel pole driven tens of meters into the seabed. Pile driving is done with a hydraulic hammer that repeatedly strikes the pole. <\/p><p>To humans, it may sound like a dull knock in the distance.<br>For fish, marine mammals, and plankton larvae, it is something completely different.<\/p><p>Underwater, sound travels extremely far \u2014 much farther than in air \u2014 and much more efficiently. For marine animals, sound is not a minor sense but their primary way of perceiving the environment. They use it for:  <\/p><ul><li>Communication<\/li><li>Orientation<\/li><li>Hunting<\/li><li>Avoiding predators<\/li><\/ul><p>Research in Belgian waters (by Jan Haelters, Elisabeth Debusschere, and Dick Botteldooren) shows that especially pile driving during the construction phase produces intense, impulsive sound waves that can be harmful to fish and marine mammals. Studies show their presence decreases hours before pile driving begins due to increasing ship and construction noise. <\/p><p>This might seem positive &#8211; \u201cthey swim away\u201d, but in reality, it means a <strong>loss of habitat and feeding areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-95f27c4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"95f27c4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>2. change.<br>But climate measures must not create new environmental problems in marine ecosystems.<\/p><p>Current offshore wind innovation is therefore not only about energy yield \u2014 but also about <strong>acoustic impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-148478e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" challenge, but essentially a <strong>materials problem.<\/strong><\/p><p>Water and steel conduct vibrations extremely well.<br>Air and porous structures do not.<\/p><p>In other words: the best sound barrier is not concrete\u2026 but a controlled combination of air, structures, and membranes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element uses a flexible, multilayer membrane structure \u2014 essentially a technical textile \u2014 placed around the monopile during pile driving. At least two Belgian companies were involved in its development: <a href=\"https:\/\/textirama.be\/en\/company\/3d-weaving\/\">3D Weaving<\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/textirama.be\/en\/company\/sioen\/\">Sioen<\/a>.  <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae4daba elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae4daba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h5>How does it work?<\/h5><p>The membranes are filled with air, creating a barrier between water and the noise source. This \u201c<strong>impedance break<\/strong>\u201d strongly dampens sound waves. (<a href=\"https:\/\/greenov.green\/solutions\/subsea-quieter\/\">Greenov<\/a>) <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d1798b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4d1798b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>In this context, impedance basically means how easily a material transmits sound. Water and steel have <strong>high acoustic impedance<\/strong>, air and soft materials <strong>low<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p><p><em>An <strong>impedance break<\/strong> occurs when a sound wave passes from a high-impedance material to a low-impedance one, e.g., from steel (pile) to an air-filled textile membrane. <\/em><\/p><p><em>A large part of the sound energy is <strong>reflected or absorbed<\/strong>, and <strong>less penetrates into the water<\/strong>. In plain language: the sound \u201cbreaks\u201d and weakens because of the material change. <\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5966f6c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5966f6c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In this project, SIOEN develops and fabricates coated textiles into a reinforced panel that is placed underwater. permanent \u201cunderwater acoustic cladding.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f633db2 elementor-widget
